Derrière la caméra nous retrouvons le maître George Miller.
Ce nouvel opus vaut-il vraiment tout le battage médiatique que l’on en fait ? Voyons voir...
Le film démarre avec Furiosa enfant se faisant kidnapper et sa mère partant la secourir. Pendant les 15 prochaines années, elle sera mise en esclavage avec une vengeance grandissante envers ceux ayant tué sa mère, notamment Dementus.
Le film présente tout d’abord un défaut de taille. Mis à part beaucoup de bavardage inintéressant et une image plutôt sombre, la plupart des séquences se déroulant de nuit, rien ne se passe vraiment pendant la première heure. Ne vous attendez pas à voir Furiosa aka Anya Taylor Joy, car vous ne verrez que sa version enfant et adolescente. Ce n’est pas en soi un « problème », mais vous devenez de plus en plus impatient de voir le personnage du film que vous êtes venu voir.
Je ne gâcherai rien pour qui que ce soit, mais ce « Furiosa » - pour moi tout du moins – a un super look d’ensemble visuellement sensationnel. Cependant ces visuels « sensationnels » n’ont que le look d’un mélange de « The Road Warrior » (Mad Max 2) et « Fury Road », en d’autres termes rien de nouveau sous le soleil australien.
Un autre aspect que j’ai trouvé profondément gênant est le fait que beaucoup de plans et séquences en extérieur souffraient d’un look de tournage studio. La magnifique projection IMAX ne pouvait qu’accentuer les défauts d’une image parfois très digitale et - pire encore - le CGI dans certains plans était parfois catastrophique. À ce propos George Miller n’arrive pas à se surpasser après son « Mad Max 2 ». Je pense personnellement que personne n’arrivera à refaire l’incroyable photo du chef opérateur Dean Semler du classique de 1981 avec des plans et séquences absolument dantesques.
Le film est également beaucoup trop long. Vous pouvez - littérairement - couper une bonne partie de la première heure et la condenser pour rendre Furiosa beaucoup plus excitant et dynamique.
D’un autre côté, positif celui-là, j’ai été très surpris par Anya Taylor Joy. Elle ne parle quasiment pas de tout le film, utilisant ses yeux pour exprimer ses pensées et émotions et en cela son casting est parfait.
Chris Hemsworth, quant à lui, est une autre paire de manches. Sa perruque et son faux-nez sont horribles et sa performance en tant que Dementus fut très en deçà de ce à quoi je m’attendais. Son nom est synonyme de folie absolue et il n’en possède que le nom. À aucun moment ne fait il peur ou pire encore a-t-il l’air terrifiant comme on pourrait le penser.
Regarder un film de la série « Mad Max » sans Mel Gibson ne fonctionne pas vraiment, car Gibson est et sera toujours « The Road Warrior » (Le guerrier de la route). Tout film se prétendant Mad Max sans ce personnage iconique n’est pas vraiment Mad Max, et ce quel que soient les incroyables cascades de fous pouvant y être présentées.
Quand je rentre dans la salle IMAX, je me considère toujours très chanceux d’avoir une salle proche de chez moi, car - à mon avis - rien ne peut vraiment être comparé à une projection IMAX. Je sais que je vais être littéralement transporté dans le film que je regarderai.
Regarder Furiosa sur cet écran immense et totalement immersif, avec un son à en faire décrocher le plafond (soyons honnête on ne fait pas mieux que l’image et le son IMAX). Pendant que le film défilait, je n’ai eu que le sentiment de regarder quelque chose d’extrêmement bien fait, mais manquant cruellement de quoi que ce soit de nouveau. Tout ce qui passait devant mes yeux avait déjà été vu et revu et j’attendais quelque chose d’innovant qui malheureusement n’est jamais arrivé. Dommage.
Furiosa est très bien fait, Anya Taylor a la lourde tâche de porter le film sur ses épaules et elle le fait parfaitement. Mais à la fin je me suis senti terriblement déçu par un script plat et conventionnel avec des cascades incroyables et des séquences d’action que j’avais déjà vu dans le film de 1981. Le tout étant ici simplement amélioré avec la technologie actuelle avec un film beaucoup trop long et des dialogues d’une longueur parfois extrême qui n’ont rien à faire dans un tel film d’action.
À l’heure où j’écris ceci, Furiosa ne marche pas bien au box-office mondial. Preuve que le public veut voir quelque chose de nouveau et cela manque cruellement dans Furiosa.
À propos « Le royaume de la planète des singes », que j’ai vu dans la même salle IMAX, m’a apporté un air de fraîcheur avec de nouveaux personnages, techniquement ébouriffant, doté d’un script très malin, innovant, et amenant brillamment une suite.
George Miller aurait dû suivre cette direction. Pour beaucoup ce Furiosa a le look d’un « Mad Max 2 » sur vitaminé. Les gens veulent juste voir quelque chose d’original et pas une répétition de déjà vu des années auparavant.
L’IMAX étant ce qu’il est, l’une des plus belles salles au monde ne peut pas vous « aspirer » dans une histoire sans originalité ou surprises.
Furiosa était l’un des titres les plus attendus de 2024, ayant bénéficié d’un méga lancement marketing au Festival de Cannes, et s’est avéré - du moins pour moi - comme pour un très grand nombre de personnes comme une « méga » déception.
Avec les technologies actuelles et l’IMAX, vous vous attendez à être totalement et complètement scotché et quelle déception de voir ce Mad Max ne décollant jamais de la manière dont il aurait dû.

The follow up to « Fury Road » as expected by legions of fans.
This time around, Chris « Thor » Hemsworth is Dementus. As you might have guessed he plays the bad guy. Anya Taylor Joy is young Furiosa.
Behind the camera is Mad Max Master George Miller.
Is this new adventure in the wasteland worth all the hype ? Let’s find out…
The movie opens with Furiosa as a child being kidnapped and her mother coming after her. For the next 15 years she’ll be enslaved with an ever-growing vengeance towards the ones - namely Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) for killing her mother and kidnapping her.
First is one major drawback. Set aside a lot of rather unnecessary talk and an overall dark picture - a lot is happening at night - nothing really happens for the first hour.
Don’t expect to see Furiosa aka Anya Taylor Joy as you’ll only see the child and teenage version. It’s not an issue per say, you just grow very much impatient to see the main character appearing in the film you went to see.
I won’t spoil it for anyone but this « Furiousa » - to me anyway - looked sometimes terrific and visually amazing. However, these “terrific” and stunning visuals only looked and sounded like a mix-up of « The Road Warrior » and « Fury Road » meaning nothing new under the sun.
Another aspect which I found most distracting is the fact that a lot of the exterior shots felt like you were on a movie sound stage. The great IMAX projection only increased a sometimes very digital picture and - worst even - some shots with truly awful CGI. On that note George Miller simply cannot surpass himself after « The Road Warrior ».
I personally think no one ever will be able to recapture Dean Semler’s stunning cinematography from the 1981 classic with truly out of this word shots and incredible sequences.
The film is also overly long. You could - literally - chop off a good part of the first hour and condense it making Furiosa a much more enjoyable and dynamic experience.
On the bright side I was very much surprised by Anya Taylor Joy.
She barely speaks during the entire feature, constantly uses her eyes to convey thoughts, emotions, and she perfectly « fits the bill ».
Great casting there. Hemsworth on the other end is quite a mixed bag. His wig and prosthetic nose look terrible. Also, his overall performance as Dementus was way below what I expected. His name is synonymous with absolute craziness, and he only bears the name. At no point in the film does he look scary or even terrifying as one would think.
Watching a Mad Max movie without Max aka Mel Gibson just doesn’t quite click as Gibson is and always be The Road Warrior and any Mad Max movie without that iconic character is just not Mad Max, whatever incredible stunts are being featured.
When I step inside the IMAX theatre, I always consider myself lucky to live close to one as there is - in my opinion - nothing that could remotely compare with an IMAX projection. I know I’ll be literally transported in the film I’ll be watching.
Watching « Furiosa » on that immensely, insanely big,
and immersive screen, coupled with a rumbling sound (let’s be honest you can’t beat an IMAX sound and picture), as Furiosa was rolling, I could only feel like watching something superbly crafted but that cruelly missed anything new. Everything unfolding before my eyes was material already seen and I just kept waiting for something new and innovative that unfortunately would never come. Bummer.
« Furiosa » is superbly crafted. Anya Taylor Joy gets the huge task of holding the movie on her shoulders which she does flawlessly.
But at the end I felt terribly disappointed by a conventional and flat script, incredible stunt, and action sequences that I had already seen in the 1981 classic film.
Most everything in « Furiosa » is about action and stunt sequences already seen and only « enhanced » with today’s technology through a feature feeling overall way too long with some lengthy dialogues that simply do not fit with an action movie.
As I’m writing this, « Furiosa » is not doing too well at the international box office. Proof that perhaps people want to see something new which is something the film is sorely missing.
On that note, « Kingdom of the planet of apes », which I saw at the same IMAX theater, felt like a breeze of fresh air. Great new characters, technically stunning, adding to that formula a super smart and innovative script which inevitably but brilliantly leads to a sequel.
George Miller should have taken that path. For quite a large audience his « Furiosa » just seems like a « super souped up » version of « The Road Warrior ». People just want to see something original, not a rehash of what they’ve already seen years ago.
IMAX being what it is, even the best theater in the world just can’t take you in a story without originality or surprises.
« Furiosa » was one of the most anticipated title of 2024, benefiting from a huge Cannes Film Festival screening and ending up - for a tremendous amount of people around the world - as a huge, mega disappointment.
With today’s technology and IMAX you just expect to be totally blown away. What a huge let down to see a Mad Max movie that simply never, ever takes off the way it should.
