Lauréat du « prix du jury jeunes de la région grand est », au festival de Gérardmer 2024. Un randonneur se retrouve piégé dans un environnement inquiétant jusqu’à ce qu’il comprenne qu’une échelle est sa seule échappatoire.
Wyndham Stone (Scott Haze) commence sa randonnée au sein du désert de l’Utah quand il rencontre un enfant qui semble perdu. Celui-ci cherche ses parents, Wyndham l’aide immédiatement. Très rapidement l’enfant le sème. Arrive la tombée de la nuit quand il atteint le bord d’un précipice où il remarque un baraquement gisant en bas au beau milieu d’un énorme trou. Il voit également une échelle en fer qui permet d’y accéder. Il décide de descendre. Son cauchemar ne fait que commencer…
Le plan d’ouverture est quelque peu perturbant où l’on voit un petit garçon semblant perdu mâchouiller un doigt humain. C’est une petite indication de ce qui va suivre. Puis une vue aérienne sur un SUV s’arrêtant au beau milieu du désert à la fin d’une route. Sort du véhicule Wyndham Stone, randonneur. Il n’est d’ailleurs pas vraiment habillé pour la randonnée ou l’escalade. Après avoir marché sur une longue distance et s’être fortement éloigné de son véhicule, il rencontre un garçon perdu qu’il va essayer d’aider en lui proposant de l’eau. Le garçon réagit d’une façon plutôt brutale et le sème rapidement. Il se retrouve alors marchant dans la nuit et atteint une falaise. Il aperçoit un baraquement en bas avec de la lumière et sur le côté de la falaise une échelle en métal. Il grimpe sur l’échelle et descend. Au bout de l’échelle s’en trouve une autre en corde et il décide de descendre tout en bas. Une fois arrivé, il se dirige vers le baraquement, frappe à la porte et entre. Il y trouve une jeune femme, Alina (Kate Lyn Sheil), qui presque immédiatement lui propose de la soupe. Il accepte, mais n’a pas vraiment faim. Il passera la nuit-là pensant qu’il repartira dès le lendemain. Il se réveille, quitte discrètement le baraquement pour s’apercevoir que l’échelle en corde a disparu et qu’il se retrouve dans l’impossibilité de partir. Il découvre d’étranges enfants se baladant sur le bord du précipice et il semble que ceux-ci ne veulent pas qu’il parte. Les jours, les semaines passent et Wyndham s’aperçoit que la jeune fille vit complètement recluse et n’a probablement jamais connu la civilisation de toute sa vie.
Voilà à quoi le public peut s’attendre. Plusieurs éléments sont très intéressants : dès le premier plan, la photo est « top » ainsi que les décors rendant le film réel et organique. Scott Haze joue un personnage évoluant jusqu’à l’insanité - ce qui en soi est peu dire vu ce qu’il traverse - et sa co-star n’est pas en reste.
Nous sommes dans un film de survie. Plus on rentre dans l’histoire, et cela constitue mon grand reproche, plus le film devient fou et malsain. La cruauté des enfants est atroce et horrifiante - vous ne voudriez pas tomber dessus au détour d’une ruelle - et disons-le carrément barbare. Le traitement qu’ils infligent à l’un des leurs pour avoir été quelque peu amical avec Wyndham est abominable. À partir de ce moment, notre protagoniste comprend qu’il a peu de chance de sortir de là vivant.
« The seeding » ne révèle rien sur les personnages de ce « trou à rats ». Qui est cette jeune femme ? Que fait-elle là ? Pourquoi n’a-t-elle pas essayé de s’échapper auparavant ? Qui sont ces enfants et que font-ils là ?
J’ai trouvé le film malsain, barbare et la fin pas du tout satisfaisante. J’adore quand le personnage principal essaie de sauver sa peau ou tout du moins a une chance de le faire. La seconde partie est une descente aux enfers et le destin de Wyndham - à mon avis - est trop facile et ridicule. Le « méchant » ou quoi que ce soit que vous voulez l’appeler gagne beaucoup trop facilement et je trouve cela écœurant. Entre le film et les actualités journalières mondiales remplies d’actes barbares, il serait très positif que le « gentil » est au moins une chance de combattre le « méchant » et ce quelque que soit la forme que celui-ci revêt.
Je ne pense pas que « The seeding » plaira à beaucoup de monde. Il possède de réelles qualités artistiques, mais le récit est macabre, malsain et vraiment horrifique. Je comprends que c’est ce qui se passe dans certaines parties de notre monde en 2024 et je n’apprécie pas que l’on nous le ressasse sur grand écran.
Cela dit, je vais revoir « Evil Dead 2 ». C’est loufoque, malsain, mais tourné en dérision et le film ne se prend pas du tout au sérieux.
Ce sera un changement franchement bienvenu.

Winner of the « Prix du jury jeunes de la région grand est » award at the 2024 Gerardmer film festival. A hiker gets trapped in an unsettling environment only to find out a ladder is his only way out.
Wyndham Stone (Scott Haze) starts hiking in the desert of Utah when he meets a lost child. He tells him he’s looking for his parents, Wyndham immediately starts to help. Quickly the boy evades him. It’s nightfall and he get to the edge of a cliff where he notices a shack down below laying in a giant hole. He also notices an iron ladder going down. He decides to go down towards the shack. His nightmare is just beginning…
The opening shot is quite unsettling with a little boy seemingly lost in the desert chewing on a human finger. That is merely an indication of what’s to come. Areal shot of an SUV stopping in the middle of Utah’s wasteland by the end of a road. Coming out of the vehicle is Wyndham Stone, a hiker. He is not really dressed for either hiking or climbing. After walking quite a distance from his car, he meets a lost boy that he’s going to help by providing him with some water. The boy reacts rather harshly and quickly outpaces him. He now finds himself walking in the dark and after sunset he reaches a cliff. He sees some sort of shack down below with some light and on the side of the cliff an iron ladder. He climbs down the ladder and finds at its bottom a rope ladder that enables him to go all the way down. Once on the ground, he knocks and enters the shack to find a lady, Alina (Kate Lyn Sheil) who almost immediately offers him some soup. He accepts but isn’t overall hungry. He’ll spend the night there thinking he’ll leave first thing the following morning. When he wakes up, he discreetly leaves to see that the rope ladder’s gone and finds himself unable to leave. He discovers strange children circling the edge of the hole and it seems they don’t want him to get out. Days, weeks passes as Wyndham finds out the girl is living totally off grid and most likely never even saw the light of civilization.
This is what the audience is in for. Several elements are quite interesting : From the first shot the cinematography is top notch as well as the production design making it real and organic. Scott Hazes plays a character going all the way to insanity - which is an understatement with what his character goes through - and his female co-star is top notch.
We’re in a survival movie. My biggest complaint is that as the story unfolds, the crazier and the more insane it gets. The children’s cruelty is downright atrocious and horrifying - you wouldn’t want to stumble upon them on a street corner - if not barbaric. The treatment they’ll inflict on one of their own for being a bit friendly with Wyndham is abominable. From then on, our main protagonist understands he barely stands a chance of getting out of there alive.
The seeding doesn’t reveal anything about the characters in this « hellhole ». Who’s the girl ? What is she doing there ? Why didn’t she try to escape before ? Who are these children ? What are they doing here ?
I thought the film was hands down insane, barbaric and the ending most unsatisfactory. I love when the character tries to fight for his life or at least get a chance at trying. The second part is a descent in hell and the hero’s fate - in my opinion - is way too easy and ridiculous. Evil or whatever you want to call it here clearly and effortlessly wins and that to me is literally sickening. Between the film and the daily worldwide news with all these barbaric acts happening all over, it would be somewhat refreshing to have the « good guy » at the very least standing a chance to fight « the bad guy » in whatever shape or form.
I don’t think « The seeding » will appeal to lot of people. It has some true visual artistic qualities, but the story is macabre, insane, and truly horrifying. I understand that’s what we’ve come to in parts of the world in 2024 and I absolutely do not enjoy that same rehash on the big screen.
That being said, I’ll watch again « Evil Dead 2 ». It’s goofy, insane, but all played for laughs and doesn’t take itself seriously.
And that will be a very welcome change.
