« Mad God » is Phil Tipett’s first director outing shot over a period of 30 years. Difficult to explain what the story is about but be aware that it’s a horror movie and when I say horror, I do mean it implicitly. Let’s explain.
« Mad God » is an experimental stop motion film taking place in a truly nightmarish world full of monsters, mad scientists, including a plethora of incredibly nuts things literally out of this world. Thought and directed by legendary Phil Tippett, stop motion and visual effects master.
All sets, creatures and environments are all crafted by hands and shot at his Berkeley’s studio.
Before I continue a word of advice : Mad God is a horror movie, experimental as it may be but it’s still a horror movie. You must prepare yourself to be in a special mental state before watching it.
An incredible amount of work has been poured into the film as we’ve rarely seen before. What is shown is prodigiously and painstakingly crafted as you keep wondering about the patience one had to achieve the look of such worlds and characters.
« Mad God » can be totally disconcerting as I was when I saw it.
Set aside its incredible visuals, I still, even while I’m writing these lines, don’t understand it’s meaning.
Let’s be fair and proceed with the pros and the cons.
The pros : A larger than life allegory from a special effets genius. If you set aside its violence, « The Texas Chainsaw Massacre » seems like a walk in the park compared with scenes from « Mad God ».
« Mad God » is a technical marvel, the stop motion world is as terrifying as it’s fascinating. It also allows to discover one of Phil Tippett’s unknown personality side, an absolute genius who made us all dream for decades. Be prepared for a trip beyond horror as it’s literally grueling for the eyes, the stomach and that’s putting it mildly.
The cons : It reaches such an unbelievable degree of violence and horror with things I never thought possible from someone like Phil Tippett.
It shows our world after a conflict in the most « ultra-violent » way and one would think God is making us pay a terrible price. It’s beyond dark, it’s beyond bleak, it’s beyond murky, I didn’t see one pretty image that didn’t end up in some sort of disaster : A creature gets eaten and other terrible things. Now I think you get the picture : it’s so bleak and so dark that I won’t elaborate any further. Some will surely expect something else from Phil Tippett and to be honest I’m one of them.
I’ve been trying to lead the way while voicing my own opinion.
You be the judge, the « Mad God » experience is something you’re not likely to forget…. whatever your final thoughts are.

Après la parution de son monumental livre « 123 ans de cinéma fantastique et de SF – essais et données pour une histoire du cinéma fantastique 1895-2019 » paru en janvier 2019, Alain Pelosato a continué à regarder des films et des séries de télévision ! « Quand on écrit ce genre d’ouvrage », explique l’auteur, « c’est sans fin puisque des films et des séries, il continue à en sortir sans cesse ! Il faut donc prendre la décision de s’arrêter pour publier. C’est pourquoi j’écris et publie régulièrement des mises à jour depuis 1998. »
De plus, certains éditeurs de DVD ressortent des films des archives et les publient, il y a aussi la télévision et les plateformes sur Internet. Du coup, le présent livre couvre la période 1951 à 2023.
Voici donc la dernière mise à jour : un livre de 513 pages grand format (20,32x25,4cm) avec plus de 2120 entrées dans l’index sur 20 pages !, c’est dire s’il contient beaucoup de chroniques, d’analyses et aussi, la spécialité de l’auteur, de vastes mises à jour de listes thématiques de films (taxinomie du cinéma fantastique).
